Collaborative Research & Feasibility Study

Many current agricultural systems around the world are unsustainable, which contribute largely to problems such as malnutrition for over a billion people worldwide. Most systems emphasize production profits resulting in environmental degradation, and unsustainability. A crucial shift is needed that focuses on sustainable food systems, which contribute to public health, food security, and the environment. Communities in Detroit, Michigan are currently adapting to a small-scale sustainable food system setup by Seed Wayne, which is a local sustainable food systems initiative organized by Wayne State University. Seed Wayne functions by connecting with local communities to plant gardens, sell produce, and educate the public. One big challenge in this on-going effort is the design in planting sustainable gardens, so we will conduct research to find experimental designs that could be implemented by Seed Wayne. A feasibility study would be most suitable to this challenge, because there are numerous experimental methods to growing sustainable gardens. A study would help review, and evaluate all the different alternatives before recommending one to our audiences.
